First Place 2003

Joel Davenport

Bagsvaerd Church Copenhagen, Denmark

I have struggled to put my experience of the church and the next two hours into words, you see I not only found the church to be a truly architectural jewel but is also a place full of spirit, and my experience was emotional and wondrous and I cannot separate the experience of my heart from that of my architectural eye. You see, the thing that hits you first when you enter the church, is the sound. This is the thing that tugs at your heart and makes it sing the entire time you are in that place. The church is more like a musical instrument than a building. It has a roof that folds like a wave in the ocean, this concrete curve ripples up and down above your head and somehow it catches the beautiful voices of the choir and lifts them as though they were blown from the lungs of an angel.
